Modernizing Campus Digital Signage Without Breaking the Budget

Dual Dual-Sided HD Outdoor LED Walls — Existing Structure Reused, Custom-Engineered Brackets, and Automated Ambient Light Control

Seminole State College needed a trusted AV partner to replace badly outdated on-campus digital signage, specifically an aging dot-panel LED video wall that no longer met the visual standards of a modern institution. The college wanted a high-definition upgrade that could carry important information to students and guests across campus, hold up to Florida's outdoor conditions, and last for years without another costly replacement cycle.

Cost mattered just as much. The college already had structural infrastructure in place and was not in a position to fund a brand-new installation from the ground up. They needed a partner who could engineer a smarter path to the same high-quality outcome. They chose Crunchy Tech for our ability to custom engineer and design solutions built around the client's exact needs, and the result delivered both a sharp visual upgrade and real cost savings.

Project challenges

Reuse, Resolution, Remote Signal, and Round-the-Clock Outdoor Performance

The Seminole State project brought a set of interlocking technical and logistical challenges, each one calling for creative engineering:

The existing structural frames that held the old LED boards had to be reused rather than replaced, a cost-saving requirement from the college that tightly constrained the physical install. The new, higher-resolution LED cabinets had a different form factor than the old panels, so standard mounting hardware would not work. Custom interface brackets and metalwork had to be designed and fabricated from scratch to fit the new cabinets precisely within the existing structures.
One of the two LED wall locations sits on a busy campus intersection, exposed to Florida's full range of lighting throughout the day. The display had to stay fully legible in direct sunlight without causing light pollution or discomfort after dark, which called for automated brightness management rather than a fixed output level.
The NovaStar video wall processor could not sit next to the LED wall install point; the nearest IDF was a significant distance away. Carrying the processor's signal over that distance without degradation took a purpose-built distribution solution that used the college's existing fiber network.
The finished installation had to look polished and consistent with the campus, which meant custom sheet metal fabrication, powder-coated to match the color and finish of the surrounding structure at each site.

Understanding the client's needs

A Long-Term Digital Signage Platform Built for Campus Life

Seminole State College's requirements were clear and practical: replace outdated dot-panel signage with a high-definition platform that could communicate event reminders, key dates, and important campus messages to students and visitors in a modern format. The college needed a solution that would not require another major upgrade within a few years, so long-term reliability and display quality were central to the design.

Budget discipline was just as important. The college was not after the most expensive solution on the market; they were after the best solution for their specific circumstances. That meant a partner who could find ways to cut cost without cutting quality, and reusing the existing structural frames was the biggest of those opportunities. Once Crunchy Tech confirmed that new custom brackets could make the existing structures work, the college had a clear, cost-effective path to a fully modernized signage platform.

The system also needed to be low-maintenance. The ambient-light automation requirement reflected the college's wish for a system that managed itself, delivering the right brightness at the right time without manual adjustments from facilities staff.

Implementation methodology

Measure, Engineer, Fabricate, Install: A Coordinated Design-Build Approach

The Seminole State installation was executed through Crunchy Tech's integrated design-build methodology, with a significant custom-fabrication phase ahead of physical installation. The process started with precise field measurements of both existing structural frames, confirming the dimensional constraints the new LED cabinet mounting solution had to meet. From those measurements, Crunchy Tech's engineering team designed the custom interface brackets and specified the sheet metal fabrication needed for a clean, weather-tight, aesthetically matched finish.

With the structural solution engineered and fabricated, the install team removed the old dot-panel cabinets and mounted the new high-resolution LED cabinets on the custom brackets, checking alignment and fit on both sides of each dual-sided display. The ambient light sensors were installed and programmed at the busy-intersection location, with automation thresholds calibrated to the site's sun exposure and the college's preferences.

Signal infrastructure was handled by adding fiber converters at the relevant IDF and display locations, so the NovaStar processor's output traveled reliably across the college's existing fiber without new cabling. Full commissioning covered content loading, brightness calibration, automation testing, and end-to-end display quality checks at both sites before handover.

Key Technology Partners

  • NovaStar: Video wall processor managing content delivery, video output, and display control for both dual-sided outdoor LED walls across the two campus installation sites.
  • Crunchy Tech Custom Fabrication: In-house design and engineering of custom interface brackets and powder-coated sheet metal panels, supporting structural reuse and a clean finished appearance at both locations.

Custom-Engineered LED Upgrade Across Two Campus Sites

To deliver a modern, high-definition outdoor digital signage platform for Seminole State College, Crunchy Tech deployed a complete LED video wall system: high-resolution dual-sided displays, NovaStar processing, custom-fabricated structural integration hardware, automated ambient light sensing, and fiber-based signal extension.

The custom interface bracket solution was the engineering centerpiece. Crunchy Tech's team measured the existing structural frames at both sites, then designed and fabricated steel interface brackets that mounted the new higher-resolution LED cabinets cleanly on both sides of each structure, matching the physical profile of the original installation while making a major jump in display quality. Custom sheet metal panels, powder-coated to match the surrounding structure finishes, completed the visual integration at each site.

The ambient light sensor system was programmed to run the LED wall at 100% of its 6,000-nit rating during daylight for maximum visibility, then drop output to 40% at sunset, cutting power consumption, extending panel life, and keeping the display from getting harsh in the evening campus environment. Signal delivery was solved with fiber converters on the college's existing fiber, which carried the NovaStar processor output to each wall location without new cable runs.

Results & impact

A High-Definition Campus Signage Platform Built to Last

The completed installation delivered two dual-sided 10ft x 5ft high-definition outdoor LED video walls across Seminole State College's campus, both keeping the same physical profile as the original structures they replaced and both built to serve the college's signage needs for years without another major upgrade.

The new displays had an immediate, measurable impact. Student engagement with campus messaging rose 40%, reflecting the sharply better visibility and visual quality compared with the old dot-panel boards. The automated brightness system keeps the walls performing well around the clock: vivid and legible in Florida's intense daytime sun, and comfortably dimmed after dark.

The cost outcome mattered just as much. By engineering the solution around the college's existing structural frames instead of new structures, Crunchy Tech delivered a 30% cost saving versus competing vendor proposals, giving Seminole State College a high-quality, long-term signage platform at a price that fit the budget.
