What digital signage is, and why most of it goesstale

Digital signage is the commercial displays, digital media players, and cloud software that put the right message on the right screen at the right time.

This includes menus at lunch, promos at happy hour, the game and your own drink special on one screen at once. Done right, a screen sells for you. Done the opposite, it turns into wallpaper, running the same loop it launched with while nobody looks.

That is the difference between buying screens and building a system. We don't resell screens. We plan the digital signage content, spec and install the displays, set up software your team can run, and stay on the hook after the boxes are empty.

Capabilities

One digital signage system, everyscreen with a job to do

Every system we build comes down to five things. Pick the tier that fits each area.

Content Management & Dayparting

The Challenge

Signage goes stale when updating it means a vendor call, a USB stick, or a ladder.

What We Deliver

Scheduled content flips your screens on their own, breakfast to lunch to happy hour to game day.
  • Drag-and-drop layouts
  • Scheduling by daypart and campaign
  • Proof-of-play confirmation per screen
  • Roles and permissions for multi-location brands

How we design

How we design and install digitalsignagesolutions

Content plan first, hardware second. A screen with nothing worth watching is a cost.

Most signage fails because someone bought screens before deciding what they would say. We start the other way. First we map what your signage needs to show across a day and a year (breakfast to happy hour, game day to the holidays), and that plan decides how many screens you need and where they go.

We set the mounting height and angle so a menu board reads easily from the back of the line, wire it on its own network so it never fights your point-of-sale, and hand your team software they can run from a laptop. Digital signage installation is something we do once and do right.

Commercial displays

Commercial digital displays vsconsumerTVs

The digital signage display is the easiest decision to get wrong (and the most expensive).

Consumer digital displays
InstallCommercial digital displays vs consumer TVs

Commercial-Grade Digital Displays

A consumer TV is built to run 8 to 12 hours a day. A restaurant runs its screens twice that, so a consumer set usually dies in one to three years, often with the warranty voided because it was never rated for the job.

A commercial display is built for 16 to 24 hours a day and lasts 7 to 10 years, and it stays bright enough to beat the light in the room, so a window-facing screen needs two to three times the brightness of one in a dark corner. Already own screens? We check what you have before we quote anything new, because the good ones can often stay.

Platform

Plays well with the stackyoualreadytrust

You buy screens once. You use the software every day for a decade.

Built to fit your system

The digital signage software matters more than the screens. We set up one dashboard that runs your signage alongside your displays, audio, and lighting, so it is one login instead of four vendor portals. It works with the major commercial display lines and the scheduling and point-of-sale tools you already use.

For a chain, corporate can lock the brand look while each location runs its own local promos, and proof-of-play confirms every screen is showing what it should. If a screen goes down, an alert can take over every screen in seconds.

Tiers

Digital signage that paysforitself

Good informs. Better sells. Best turns every screen into a promotion for your own specials.

We quote three real options.

  • Good covers the basics: commercial displays, cloud software, and scheduled content your team updates in minutes.
  • Better adds automatic dayparting and content tied to your calendar, so the screens flip from lunch to happy hour on their own.
  • Best puts the screens to work on revenue, pushing your specials and event promos to the right screen at the right moment.

The part most operators miss: one commercial screen can show the game and your own drink special at the same time, side by side. Put the Super Bowl special next to the Super Bowl, and a real share of the room orders it. That is a TV that makes money instead of costing it.

Before you sign

What to ask a digitalsignagecompany

Five questions to ask any signage company, including us, before you sign.

The signage should work for you

Who updates the content after launch, and how long does a digital menu change take? If the answer is "call us," walk away, because your team should do it from a browser in minutes.

  1. What happens when a screen fails on a Saturday night, and is the company that sold it the one that answers the phone?
  2. Is the digital display signage rated for the hours a day you actually run them?
  3. Can the screens you already own join the new system, or is the plan to replace everything?
  4. What does the content look like in month six? Because that is what decides whether the signage is still earning a year from now.

Let's Talk
Specialized Signage

Built for the jobitdoes

Two signage jobs need their own engineering: menu boards that drive orders, and outdoor displays that survive the weather. We build both.

What is digital signage, and how does it work?

Digital signage is a network of commercial displays, digital media players and cloud software that shows the right content on the right screen at the right time. You schedule what plays from a browser. The player pushes it to each screen, and proof-of-play confirms it's actually showing. One commercial screen can run live TV and your own promo content at the same time. That's what turns a screen into a sales tool instead of a decoration. We plan the digital content, spec the displays, install them, set up the software and support it post-launch.

How do you set up digital signage for a multi-location operator?

Corporate builds and approves the brand content from one dashboard, and each location handles its own local promos and menu changes under set permissions. We monitor every screen across every location from one place. A black screen gets caught before a guest ever sees it. A local manager can push a one-night promo without calling corporate, and corporate can roll every screen back in minutes. We built our first system like this in 2013. It ran across 180+ locations for 12 years straight.

Can I use a regular TV for digital signage?

You can, and it usually costs more in the end. Consumer TVs are rated for 8 to 12 hours a day and often fail within one to three years under commercial use. That can void the warranty outright. Commercial displays are built to run 16 to 24 hours a day and stay bright enough to read in a lit room. We spec commercial LCD for most indoor spots and high-brightness panels for windows and sunny walls. Large or outdoor screens get LED. The choice comes down to how far people sit, how bright the room is and how many hours a day the screen runs.

How much does digital signage cost?

It depends on the number of screens, the display grade and the software tier. At Crunchy Tech, we quote 'Good,' 'Better' and 'Best.' Good is commercial displays with cloud-scheduled content. Better adds automatic dayparting and multi-zone layouts. Best adds data-driven content and promotions built around your own specials. POPAI research puts the sales lift on featured products at 8.1%, and that's before accounting for dayparting or never having to reprint a menu again. There's one catch: it only works if the content stays fresh. That's why we build the content plan into the design and not leave it for later.

Do you install digital signage or just sell the system?

We're a design-build integrator. We plan, spec and install the system ourselves, not hand you a catalog and a truck delivery. That means we plan the content and design the screen layout first. Then we buy the digital signage hardware and install it with proper mounts and hidden cabling. We set up the software, train your team and support it after launch. We also check what you already own before quoting anything new. One team, on the hook for the result.

What clients say

Operators who run on our systems

Client successes drive Crunchy Tech to become better. Below is how our customers feel about us.

The way you can do different layouts on different TVs, so the marketing team can do their own in-house advertisements — that was really a big thing. Just for them to be able to upload their photos on their own and choose what dates to do it on is really helpful.
