Multi-Wall Edge Blending

Many projectors, onecontinuousimage

Multi-wall edge blending turns a row of projectors into a single immersive picture that wraps a room, a curve or a dome. We design the projection system, align it and tune it in the space so the seams disappear.

Immersive

One image across a wholeroom

Multi-wall edge blending is a projection technique that overlaps and aligns several projectors so they read as one continuous image.

This method works across any large, curved, or wraparound surface. It is the foundation of any immersive project indoor or outdoor. Instead of a grid of separate images with bright overlap lines, you get one picture that wraps a wall, a corner or a full dome. It's how a flat room becomes a dynamic environment.

The hard part is making the seams vanish and keeping the whole surface consistent. That takes overlap blending, geometric warping for curved and irregular surfaces, and color and brightness matching for the one projector to look like the next. We design the projection system, install it, and calibrate it in the actual room, because alignment that looks right in a model never survives the real surface.

Where immersive projection works

Experience-driven spaces that surround the visitor.

What we deliver

Four parts of an immersiveprojection build

Each one is what makes many projectors read as one continuous image.

Capability 01

Edge Blending & Stitching

The Challenge

Untuned multi-projector setups show bright bands and visible joins.

What We Deliver

We overlap and feather adjacent projectors so the image reads as one continuous surface.
  • Overlap blending across every join
  • Projector stitching for whole-wall coverage
  • Brightness feathering across the seam
  • Verified at the room's real brightness

How it works

How multiple projectors become oneimage

Three things have to be right for the seams to disappear: the overlap, the geometry and the color.

Edge blending

Adjacent projectors overlap by a margin. We feather the brightness across that overlap so the join reads as continuous instead of a bright or dark band. Done right, you can't find the seam even when you look for it.

Geometric warping

Flat projectors hitting a curve, a dome, a corner or an irregular surface need the image pre-distorted for it to land correctly on the geometry. We warp each projector to the surface, which means straight lines stay straight and the picture wraps cleanly.

Color and brightness matching

No two projectors are identical out of the box as they drift apart over time. We match white point, gamma and brightness across every projector so the blended surface looks like one screen, then keep them matched through calibration.

Where it fits

Where immersive projection earnsitsplace

Edge blending is the right tool when the surface is bigger, more curved or more wraparound than panels can cover.

immersive projection systems
InstallWhere immersive projection earns its place

Immersive projection rooms, experience centers and brand showcases, where the goal is to surround the visitor as opposed to just showing them a screen. Simulation and training environments, where a wraparound image puts the operator inside the scene. Domes and planetarium-style spaces. Curved lobbies and architectural surfaces where a flat display would never fit. And large temporary or event canvases that need to cover a whole wall or facade.

We can build all the way out to a full simulation environment, including immersive flight-simulation rooms, because the work is the same discipline at every scale: understand the surface, design the projection geometry and synchronize content across every projector.

Edge blending is the projection layer of our broader immersive and experiential AV practice, where projection, sound and control come together as one environment.

Projection vs Videowalls

Edge blending or a videowall

Projection blending and LED video walls solve different problems. The surface and the room decide which one.

Edge-blended projection wins when the surface is huge, curved, domed or wraparound. It wins when you want the image to disappear into the architecture and when the room's light can be controlled. It covers shapes a flat panel array never could.

A LED video wall is more ideal when you need brightness in an uncontrolled-light room, all-day durability and a flat, modular surface that runs for years with little fuss. Plenty of spaces are better served by panels, and we'll tell you when that's the case rather than selling projection for its own sake. Often the right answer is matching the technology to the room, which is the whole point of designing before specifying.

Let's Talk

How we deliver

Designed, aligned and tunedonsite

An immersive image is only as good as its commissioning. The room is where it comes together.

Designed, aligned and tuned on site
InstallDesigned, aligned and tuned on site

We design the projector count, placement and throw for your surface, model the blend and warp geometry, and plan the content source and control so the system is run not from a stack of remotes but from one interface. The rack is built and proven in our shop first.

Then we align and calibrate in the actual space. Blend zones get feathered, geometry gets warped to the real surface and color and brightness get matched across every projector - at the brightness the room runs. We support it afterward, with most issues resolved remotely, and we recalibrate as projectors age so year three still reads as one image.

What is multi-wall edge blending?

Multi-wall edge blending is a projection technique that overlaps and aligns several projectors so they read as one continuous image across a large, curved or wraparound surface. Instead of a visible grid of separate images with bright seams where they meet, you get a single picture that covers a whole wall or a full dome. It works by feathering the brightness across the overlap between adjacent projectors, warping each image to fit the surface geometry and matching color/brightness across the array for it all to look like one screen. It's the foundation of an immersive projection room.

What is an immersive projection room, and what can you put it in?

An immersive projection room uses edge-blended projection so the image wraps around the visitor instead of stopping at a frame. Experience centers and brand showcases use it to put a story on every wall. Simulation and training rooms use it to put the operator inside the scene instead of watching one. Domes, planetariums and curved architectural surfaces need it because a flat display won't fit the geometry. The same discipline scales up to a full flight-simulation environment: read the surface, design the projection geometry, map the content to the space.

Should I use edge-blended projection or an LED video wall?

It depends on the surface and the room. Edge-blended projection is the better fit when the surface is huge, curved, domed or wraparound. It's the perfect choice for when you want the image to disappear into the architecture and when you can control the room's light. An LED video wall, meanwhile, makes the most sense when you need brightness in an uncontrolled-light room, all-day durability and a flat, modular surface that runs for years with little maintenance. Neither is better in the abstract. We assess the geometry and the lighting and recommend the one that is suited best to your needs.

How do you keep the seams and colors from showing?

Three things, all tuned in the actual room. 1. We feather the brightness across the overlap between projectors so the join reads as continuous. 2. We warp each projector's image to the real surface geometry so it lands correctly on curves and corners. And 3. We match white point, gamma and brightness across every projector for the blended surface to look as though it's one device and not a quilt of slightly different images. Because projectors drift as they age, we recalibrate on a schedule, so the system still reads as one image years after install. Alignment that looks right in a model never survives the real surface, which is why commissioning happens on site.
