LED Video Walls

LED Video Walls

Batch-Matched for the Long Haul

LED is the most unforgiving display technology in commercial AV. We design every wall to age the way it looked on commissioning day, five years in, ten years in, batch-matched panel by batch-matched panel.

Video Wall Solutions

An LED video wall is a ten-yearasset. Most are installed like a one-day project.

An LED video wall is a display built from self-emitting LED modules tiled into one continuous surface, with no backlight and no bezel grid.

Done right, it lasts 7–10 years and looks identical at year ten to commissioning day. Done wrong - and most are - it becomes a patchwork of slightly different whites by year three, with at least one dead module nobody can match.

The human eye detects color wavelength differences as small as 3–5 nanometers (Kopp Glass). That's why a wall built from two production batches looks fine on install day and visibly wrong six months later. We engineer LED walls in order for the year-ten install to look like the year-one install: pixel pitch math, single-batch procurement, batch-matched spares stored and labeled by project, engineered structural backer and ventilation, a dedicated network and annual calibration.

What we deliver

Five LED engineering disciplines

Each discipline is the difference between a ten-year asset and a six-figure patchwork.

Capability 01

Pixel Pitch + Brightness Engineering

The Challenge

Wrong pixel pitch pixelates the wall at closest viewing distance; wrong brightness washes content in ambient light.

What We Deliver

We measure your room and recommend a single pitch and brightness spec, with reasoning attached.
  • Pitch range: 0.9mm boardroom to 8mm+ outdoor stadium
  • Brightness range: 600 nits indoor to 8,000+ nits direct sun
  • Viewing distance modeling per zone
  • Ambient light measurement at peak hours

Why LED walls fail

Why LED video walls failearly

The integrator's job is to never let your wall become two batches.

LED modules are made in batches, and batches drift. Today's panels and next month's can come from different production runs. Their white point, red saturation and gamma shift by amounts the eye catches, even when the spec sheet says they match.

A hotel lobby learned that the hard way. A previous integrator built its 12-panel LED video wall display on a deadline, eight panels from current stock and four from next month's run. It looked perfect on day one, but eighteen months later the wall had two visible color zones. The only fix was a six-figure swap.

We prevent that with single-batch procurement, and we keep batch-matched spares from the same run in our climate-controlled warehouse, labeled by project and batch number. When a panel fails in year four, the replacement matches and you can't tell where the seam is.

Engineering pipeline

How we install an LED videowall

Every Crunchy Tech LED video wall runs through the same engineering discipline.

Pixel pitch and brightness math

We measure the closest, average and farthest viewing distances and recommend a single pitch. We measure ambient light at peak hours and spec brightness against the actual mounting position. Indoor walls in controlled lighting get one spec; lobby walls facing south-facing glass get another; outdoor walls get a third.

Single-batch procurement and stored spares

Every panel on the wall comes from one production batch. Extra modules from that same batch ship to our climate-controlled warehouse, labeled by project name and batch number, available for the life of the install.

Structural backer and rear ventilation

The video wall mounts to engineered framing rated for the panel weight, the public's reach and the seismic profile of the room. LED walls draw 300–500+ watts per panel, and heat is the #1 killer of LED lifespan. Rear ventilation and ambient cooling are factored into every install.

Redundant signal, power and dedicated AV network

Redundant sending cards, redundant receiving cards and redundant power on every panel where uptime matters. LED walls live on their own VLAN. They never share a network with POS, guest Wi-Fi or security cameras.

Environments

Indoor vs outdoor LED videowalls

Two environments. Two different engineering disciplines. One platform behind both.

Indoor LED video walls

Indoors, the room does you favors. Lighting is controlled, the space is climate-conditioned, and people stand closer. The wall does not have to fight the sun. We usually run fine-pitch LED, 1.5 to 2.5mm, for lobbies and high-end retail where people get close, and 2.9 to 3.9mm for sports bars and hospitality where the nearest viewer is farther back. The closer the nearest seat, the tighter the pitch, so no one is looking at individual pixels. Brightness runs 600 to 2,500 nits, set to the ambient light in the room. Cabinets are indoor-rated and, engineered right - an indoor wall lasts about a decade.

Outdoor venue-owned LED

Outdoors, everything is trying to break the wall - direct sun, rain and wide temperature swings. The cabinets are weather-rated, IP65 at a minimum and IP66 or better where they take direct rain or a pressure washer, and the panels run 5,000 to 8,000 nits to stay readable in full sun. Fans and heaters handle the temperature, and we handle the permitting, which usually takes several weeks.

You will see these on restaurant patios, hotel pool decks, sports-bar seating and venue-owned scoreboards. The mounts are engineered to the wind load, rated to hold through a hurricane rather than trusting the panel to survive impact. Outdoors, a wall lasts about a decade with weather-cycle maintenance.

Premium tier

Direct View LED video wall: the bezel-free option

dvLED uses individual surface-mount LEDs as pixels. No backlight, bezel or seams. A single continuous image at large scale.

The result is brightness and contrast no LCD can touch, in a single continuous image with no bezel grid breaking it up. Stand close and it still reads like a 4K monitor. Executive lobbies want it because the wall doubles as a brand statement. Broadcast studios need it since the wall is on camera. A single 110-inch-plus display can carry an entire boardroom or retail flagship on its own. Control rooms depend on it for bezel-free situational awareness.

In practice, just about any interior LED wall we build today is fine-pitch direct view; outdoor walls, where people stand farther back, don't need to be. The tradeoff is higher cost per square foot than traditional LED or LCD. It's worth it when the wall is the room. We design and install fine-pitch Direct View LED at pitches as fine as 0.9mm for the closest viewing applications. The pricing reflects the level of engineering.

Differentiator

The Batch-Match Promise

Year-four replacement matches year-one install. The difference between a ten-year asset and a six-figure patchwork.

After install Support

When a panel fails in year four - and panels eventually do - we ship a batch-matched spare from the inventory we keep on your behalf. The failed module goes back to the manufacturer for repair and re-enters that revolving pool. A matched replacement is always on hand and you're never waiting on a new production run. The video wall looks identical to commissioning day. To the best of our knowledge, no other integrator in our market runs a revolving spares program at our scale.

Always ask these questions

Before you sign with any LED video wall vendor, ask three questions.

  1. Is every panel coming from a single production batch?
  2. Will spare modules from that batch be stored on my behalf, and for how long?
  3. Who pays for replacement panels if the batch is no longer available in year five?

Count on Crunchy Tech and let us know your goals so we can design the LED video wall system that will drive success for your business.

What is an LED video wall, and how is it different from LCD?

An LED video wall is built from self-emitting LED modules tiled into one continuous surface, with no backlight and no bezel grid between panels. An LCD video wall uses backlit panels with a thin bezel where each screen meets the next. The practical difference: LED is brighter, scales to any size or shape, fights ambient light, and shows one unbroken image, which is why it wins in lobbies, hospitality, and anywhere outdoors. LCD delivers higher pixel density per square inch at a lower upfront cost. It's the right call in smaller, controlled-lighting indoor rooms where a faint seam is acceptable.

What pixel pitch do I actually need, and how do you calculate it?

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between adjacent LEDs, and you match it to your closest viewing distance. A useful rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance in feet ≈ pixel pitch in millimeters. Three pitch tiers cover most commercial applications:

  • 2.5mm pitch for 8–10 feet minimum viewing distance. Sports bars, hospitality flagships, large hospitality lobbies.
  • 1.5mm pitch for ~5 feet. Restaurants, boutique lobbies, mid-size meeting rooms.
  • 0.9–1.2mm pitch (Direct View LED) for 3–4 feet. Executive boardrooms, broadcast studios, applications where the wall itself is the brand statement.

We measure every viewing position in your room and recommend a single pitch.

Can LED walls be used outdoors and how long do they last?

Yes. Outdoor LED needs weather-rated cabinets, high-brightness panels and thermal management. We handle permitting (typically 6–8 weeks), structural engineering, weatherproof cabling and ongoing maintenance. Properly engineered commercial LED lasts 7–10 years indoors or out; consumer-grade LED used commercially fails in 2–3 years. The difference is duty-cycle rating, thermal engineering, calibration discipline and access to batch-matched replacement modules.

Why are LED video walls so expensive, and what drives the price?

LED video wall price is driven by pixel pitch (finer costs more), total surface area, indoor vs outdoor rating, controller and content management complexity, and structural and mounting requirements. A small interior fine-pitch wall and a large outdoor LED video wall installation live in different orders of magnitude. The reason a properly engineered LED wall costs more than a stack of TVs is the same reason it lasts three to four times longer: commercial duty-cycle panels, single-batch procurement, stored spares, engineered structure and calibration. We provide a three-tier (Good/Better/Best) proposal where you can see what each level changes about the outcome, then weigh that against the cost.

Do you sell LED video wall panels or install them?

We don't sell panels. We're a design-build integrator: we design the wall for your room, procure the right panels on your behalf in a single batch, install them, commission and calibrate and support the wall through its lifecycle. Maintenance happens in three layers: proactive remote monitoring, scheduled annual recalibration and batch-matched panel replacement from spares we stored from the original production run. Annual maintenance contracts are typically 8–12% of equipment value, which is industry standard.
